How did you meet your canine companion?
I knew that I needed a dog in my life, but I loved each pup I came across equally. One evening I saw a photo of Laika, who a kind soul had found loose in Golden Gate Park, and immediately knew. I arranged to pick her up the next day. She was scrawny, sick, and scared of everything — but it was the beginning of a wonderful adventure. We think that she was abandoned once she grew out of tiny puppy mode and was in clear need of medical care. Luckily, a few pills and some TLC later, her winning personality emerged.
What’s the story behind your dog’s name?
Laika was the name of the first dog in space! A lot of people think she's named for Leica cameras, which I admit would also be apt, since she's very photogenic. I love the romance and tragedy of the space race, and the original Laika dog was an unfortunate but noble sacrifice in the name of science. Maybe it's a bit grim to name my dog after one who has passed, but the way I see it, she's named after one of the best-known dog heroes in history.
How has your life changed since you have had your dog?
Dogs are a natural boost. I actually have Laika registered as my emotional support dog, and she's taken that job seriously even before she had her paperwork. She comes to work with me and has even inspired some friends to lose their fear of pitbull-mixes or adopt their own dogs! Once she came into my life, I incorporated long walks and outdoor adventure into my schedule a lot more often, as well, which has made both of us very happy as well. This has all lead to a life with just a little more joy in it every day, which is the best gift that I think a dog has to offer — and that a person can offer a dog.
Which 3 words best describe your dog’s personality?
Sweet, joyful, friend.
Who’s your dog’s favourite person?
Me, of course! She remembers every person she's ever met, though, and greets my friends with the same enthusiasm that I do... or more!
What’s your dog’s superpower?
Being friends with everyone. She's won over even those previously afraid of dogs, and she never forgets a friend. I can walk her down a street where an old friend lives, and she unerringly goes to their door no matter how long it's been since our last visit. On days that I don't bring her to work, people come over to my office, look around sadly, and leave. She's become the go-to therapy station for dozens of people, a job primarily consisting of cuddles, kisses, and high-fives.
If your dog had a job, what would it be?
Other than her in-office duties as everyone's best friend, Laika loves to watch children go to and from the school at the end of my street. Some greet her with big, sticky hugs. I can absolutely see her becoming a morning school monitor, walking them all the way to the end of the block and back.
What’s your dog’s most unappealing / most embarrassing habit?
Laika typically is freakishly well-mannered — I once brought her to a wedding! — but without fail, she does all of her crotch-sniffing when my bosses come around. :p
Where can we find you hanging out with your dog?
I take her most often to John McLaren Park, as it's between my home in South City and my office in Potrero Hill. However, you're also likely to find us in any of the bars and restaurants that cater to four-legged friends — recently we've hung out at Horsefeather, Zazie, and a few favorite bars like The Willows. If Laika's good, she gets a side of bacon.

After all, what's better than a drink and a dog?
