A chocolate Labrador from Gloucestershire
How did you meet your canine companion?
I was really ill about 13 years ago and I had always wanted a chocolate Labrador, it was suggested it would be a good idea to help my recovery. I spent ages looking for the right breeder and I found my first dog Mabel in Gloucestershire. I had a two hour interview on the phone and then drove all the way to Gloucestershire knowing that I actually may not see the puppies as the breeder wanted to see how I was with older dogs. I passed and we got Mabel who was meant to be my dog. She loved me, but she REALLY loved my husband, so when I got a call from the breeder saying we had scored the highest in her interview process and Mabel’s mum was having another litter, I said yes without a second thought. Margot came into my life 10 1/2 years ago.
What’s the story behind your dog’s name?
I love old fashioned names and I thought Mabel and Margot sounded like two old aunts. Margot is from the good life as she does make sure I have a good life.
How has your life changed since you have had your dog?
My life has really changed since both Mabel and Margot. They get you out walking and exercising, you learn to appreciate the simple things, they love sleep, food, love and exercise. I never leave Margot for more than two hours as she has pancreatitis and has to be fed little and often, so she is always by my side. She is a constant companion and comfort.
Which word best describe your dog’s personality?
Intelligent - I actually thought she was a bit thick for years as she never used to listen to me when Mabel was alive (she sadly died two years ago), I realised she just copied what her big sister did which saved her learning stuff. Now she listens to everything I say and we learn new things together all the time.
Who’s your dog’s favourite person?
Me, of course!
What’s your dog’s superpower?
Reading my mood
If you dog had a job, what would it be?
She has a job she is on the board of my company SVP - an ethical jewellery brand that specialises in adjustable rings that can be style in loads of ways to suit your mood and outfit. She attends lawyers meetings, meetings with retailers and is in the office all day ready to help out. She also makes sure I get out for a walk twice a day which helps clear my mind.
What’s your dog’s most unappealing / most embarrassing habit?
She doesn’t have one, she is perfect.
Where can we find you hanging out with your dog?
You can usually find us in the local pub or the local bistro in Hurstpierpoint, we both truck up there with our handbags, Yes, Margot has an Anya Hindmarch handbag. Because of her illness she can only have one type of food, Labradors live for food so she has her own handbag that is filled with her dried food that we use as treats. She knows the name Anya and goes off to look for it when we go out.
For walks we mainly hang out at Church Fields which overlook the whole of the South Downs, it’s a circular walk where we usually meet some of her mates and there is a secret pond that she likes to go to, to pootle about in and wash her face, there is a plant next to the pond that she uses to dry herself afterwards, it’s a morning ritual.
Finish this sentence “dog walks into a bar….”
and says "have you seen my handbag?"
