Yoshi was found as a stray in Texas, and we adopted him after he was transported to the North East Animal Shelter in Salem, Masachusetts
How did you meet your canine companion?
We started fantasizing about getting a dog shortly after we started dating. After we both made career moves to a company in Boston called HubSpot, we knew we were in a position to finally become dog owners. We spent a lot of time browsing adoptable dogs through adoption organizations, filled out applications, had home visits, sent references. The process was a bit overwhelming and after a few failed attempts at finding the right match, we had started to get discouraged. The weekend before Christmas, we decided to visit the Northeast Animal Shelter, “just to look”. It was a classic, "he picked us” situation. We realized how happy this little guy was and made the decision. We took Yoshi home that day and have been thankful we snagged him every day since.
What’s the story behind your dog’s name?
Jess: I have been a lover of Nintendo and Mario since I was kid, and Yoshi was always my favorite character. In college I decided that when I was a fully fledged adult, I would adopt a dog and name him Yoshi. When Nick and I were in Florida two winters ago, we visited the Kennedy Space Center because space is awesome. Inside the gift shop was a NASA dog tag maker, and we made a Yoshi tag right then and there, 10 months before we met our Yoshi. He did have a name at the shelter (Finn) but thankfully it was a temporary one that had been assigned to him and he was happy to have a new name to go along with his new best friends.
Nick: Have you heard the phrase, “Pick your battles?” This was one of those times. Actually, I love Nintendo as well - it’s one of the (countless) nerdy things we have in common. I even have a tattoo of Boo to celebrate my love of Nintendo and all things Halloween, it’s a classic double-whammy. It was easy to agree to such a rad name for our pup. So, when we went to Nasa, it was a no-brainer. Now, I can’t imagine our little astro-pup without his NASA dog tag. The tag was on display in our apartment from the day we got it to the day he came home with us.
How has your life changed since you have had your dog?
Jess: I think it would be an understatement for me to say that it got 100% more awesome. I have wanted a dog since my childhood one passed away when I was 16, so getting Yoshi felt like I had unlocked a serious adult achievement. I always knew that I needed to be a responsible pet owner, so I waited until I found the right blend of work/life balance and a great partner in life to adopt my first dog. My favorite benefit of having a dog is that Yoshi gives us another reason to go on adventures and explore new places.
Nick: There is an undeniable positive energy that comes from having a canine companion and I just want to be a happier human because of him. Jess and I have always adventurous, but Yoshi give us even more reasons to go exploring. When your pup needs exercise every day, you want to provide that for your furry prince. He inspires me to run, jump and play more and more, every day.
Which 3 words best describe your dog’s personality?
Happy, doofy, curious.
Who’s your dog’s favourite person?
Yoshi loves EVERYBODY, but he loves the two of us the most.
What’s your dog’s superpower?
Happy Blaster Vision - It’s like laser vision, but instead of shooting concentrated light beams - anyone who makes eye contact with Yoshi is instantly happier.
If your dog had a job, what would it be?
Professional toy destroyer.
What’s your dog’s most unappealing / most embarrassing habit?
Floor licking. Yoshi doesn’t beg, but he loves to scan the floor for fallen crumbs. We call it snack scamming.
Where can we find you hanging out with your dog?
We try to bring Yoshi as many places with us as possible, including our workplace. HubSpot is a dog friendly company, so we bring him to work when our schedules allow it. Yoshi loves going to HubSpot because he knows that he will get loved on all day. HubSpot even has an internal chat room where employees can alert other dog loving employees that there is a pooch to pet in the building, along with where to find them.
When not assisting us (or distracting us with his cuteness) at the office, we can be found outside. We are avid geocachers (if you are not familiar with this global game, google it! It’s really fun) so we spend a fair share of weekends in state parks exploring the trails and finding caches. We also love the beach, and taking Yoshi on road trips, like our most recent one to the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
Finish this sentence "a dog walks into a bar….”
And the whole bar says “Hi Yoshi!” because they all know his name.
