How did you meet your canine companion?
On a hot, summer day a small puppy was delivered to my door after a long journey from Texas by Save Our Scruff, a Toronto-based dog rescue and rehoming organization. Malnourished, weary-eyed and incredibly cautious, the little Belgian Malinois had no idea how lucky she was to be alive. At just five months she had already defied death not once but twice. First escaping euthanatization by a few hours, and weeks later sarcoptic mange - a fatal and difficult-to-cure form of canine scabies. Despite all she had been through she proved her resilience and will to live, ready to explore her new surroundings. With a reserved yet endearing disposition, her big pointy ears and kangaroo-like bounce, she received a lot of attention. In fact, when I said I was, "just fostering" people responded with doubtful eyes, "you're in trouble"; it was after several of these encounters that I realized my naivety. In less than one week I had pulled a classic "foster fail" and signed the adoption papers. Needless to say, it's the best 'failure' I've ever experienced!
