How did you meet your canine companion?
Penny was originally a foster of mine pulled from the NYCACC by a local rescue group, In Our Hands. I fostered her for 5 months, working on her health and behavior. When Penny was surrendered to the shelter she was very emaciated weighing only 35 pounds and had a severely injured tail. After a successful surgery to amputate the tail, we worked on her severe separation anxiety. Over a few months' time she made tremendous improvements, but she would always misbehave at adoption events and eventually we realized there was a reason: she was meant to stay with us forever. We adopted her in May of 2015 and she has been an amazing foster sister to more than 50 other dogs since then. She is the best dog in the world, and we are so grateful and lucky she chose us to be her family.
What’s the story behind your dog’s name?
We didn't put much thought into "Penny." Her name at the shelter was "Shells" which we did not think was a great name, and it said she was "copper colored" so we said great, we'll call her Penny. It turned out to be a perfect name though, since it became Pig Pen (or Penelope Pig), because she snorts like a pig!
How has your life changed since you have had your dog?
Penny has made me much more patient, and much more forgiving. She's also helped me prioritize what is really important (which is time spent with those you love). I also have not slept through the night without a little pig hoof/paw kicking me in the neck in 2 years.
Which 3 words best describe your dog’s personality?
Crazy, Cuddly, Genius
Who’s your dog’s favourite person?
What’s your dog’s superpower?
She has superdog intelligence and communication skills- she can open doors, unlock gates, solve puzzles, open cabinets, etc. She understands everything you say to her and reacts to it!
If your dog had a job, what would it be?
She'd probably be director of recreation at a nursing home. She wants everyone to get up and moving on her schedule, and then she wants to be active for like 30 minutes, and then she wants to nap and watch Golden Girls and old movies on TV the rest of the day.
What’s your dog’s most unappealing / most embarrassing habit?
She has the legendary pitbull gas and then some. Her favorite thing is to wait until we're all under the covers and let one rip. And then she smiles.
Where can we find you hanging out with your dog?
In her own private backyard! She's #PigofQueens
