The Attorney Dog Bore
Dog Bore: Adri B.
Dog: Petey Pickles
Rat terrier/basenji mix. He loves to terrorize all small animals and howls the basenji tune to any music. He's from Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons but he was initial found down south- he barks with a southern accent.
How did you meet your canine companion?
I went to a shelter in East Hampton, NY to walk some dogs and help to socialize them. I had no intention of getting a dog. As I was leaving, I saw this skinny little guy with the most amazing big ears I've ever seen. I went back inside and begged to walk just one more pup. We didn't even make it three steps before I knew I was in love. I think the love at first sight was mutual because when I bent down to tie my shoe, he licked my face.
What’s the story behind your dog’s name?
Everyone thinks that I am obsessed with pickles and that's how he got his name, but I'm not. His name was Vincent at the shelter and I knew that name wouldn't work. My mom and I were looking at him and thinking of names and at the same time shouted "Petey Pickles."
How has your life changed since you have had your dog?
The better question is how has it not changed. To name a few things though, I haven't had a full meal to myself since Petey entered my life - it is impossible to resist his begging and puppy eyes and ears (it's a thing!) I wake up every morning to kisses and go to bed with his face propped on some limb of mine. I've learned how to hunt squirrels and chipmunks in Central Park. I've become an expert in the exact type of toys and treats that make his whole bottom wiggle. And most of all, I have the most loyal and compassionate best friend to come home to every day. The first trick he ever learned was "kisses" and he will give them on demand (in fact it is the only trick he will do without treats in hand).
Which 3 words best describe your dog’s personality?
Only three? Loving, loyal, hungry
Who’s your dog’s favourite person?
I'd like to think it is me because he is my favorite but it is probably whoever is closest to him with bacon or steak.
What’s your dog’s superpower?
Petey's helicopter ears have a personality of their own and he has mastered selective listening. I can call for Petey to come into another room and he wont bat an eyelash, but if you open the refrigerator, open a bag of treats or a box of toys, his ears change position and he comes sprinting.
If your dog had a job, what would it be?
Petey already has a job, he is the Commissioner of Squirrel Patrol in Central Park (#squirrelpatrol). Once he retires, he would like to be a taste tester for a bacon company.
What’s your dog’s most unappealing / most embarrassing habit?
Petey cannot play fetch. At first it seems like he is going to play fetch and I use all of my might to throw the ball as far as possible, he runs really fast to get it and then right before he gets to the ball he runs off in the other direction and I'm the one fetching the ball.
Where can we find you hanging out with your dog?
Petey and I like to take long walks all over Central Park, NYC. We also, as cliché as it sounds, like long walks on the beach, specifically Cooper's Beach in Southampton, NY. When it is summer time, Petey spends his days on his pool float working on tanning his belly spots.
