How did you meet your canine companion?
I've met all three of my canine companions through the non profit group Greyhound Adoption of Greater Rochester. GAGR has been instrumental in helping find retired racing greyhounds their forever homes for the last 16 years. For as long as I could remember I wanted to adopt a greyhound. I don't know why. I didn't know much about them and I hadn't spent any time around them, I just thought they were the most beautiful creatures!
I got my first greyhound, Cleo, in 2010. Our second was Coco, she was adopted in 2013, and was my husband’s idea and then Cali was staying with us as a foster and she ended up being a "foster fail". They call it that when the foster parents end up adopting, and that was last year. So now we have three lovely ladies! We call them our herd!

What’s the story behind your dog’s name?
Cleo, whose full name is Cleopatra, came with her name. She lived with an older woman for about 6 months before I adopted her and I thought her name was cute and fitting so I kept it.
Coco had a number 5 racing jersey on in her photo from the race track and when we were trying to think of a name before we picked her up, my mom suggested Chanel No. 5, the perfume. I thought "Chanel" was too girly so I did some research on the fashion designer Gabrielle Chanel and learned how she had a rough beginning at life and ended up in a orphanage after her mother died. She had a brief career as a singer where she got the nickname Coco. I thought that having another dog named after a strong and important woman in history was fitting, so we went with it! And last but not least, Cali...was given a nickname of Karla at the track and we wanted to keep with a similar sound in case she was used to that. Our honeymoon was in California so she got dubbed Cali while we were fostering her and it totally stuck. So a little background for those of you who might not know, greyhounds come with racing names, and some of them you can shorten to something you like and some are just plain silly. Think about the names of race horses, they are usually a mouth full and not something you'd want to say on a daily basis!
Cleo's race name was Debbie’s Dancer. Coco's race name was KB's Honeybee Cali's race name was NSB Bonnie

How has your life changed since you have had your dog?
For the better! There are constant laughs and snuggles with these dogs. They are the sweetest, kindest and gentlest beings and they surprise me everyday with their resilience. I think that animals can teach people a lot and they are such a great form of therapy. I look forward to coming home everyday from work to see their eager faces when I open the door. Don't get me wrong there has been a lot of adjustment with each addition. Even though they are very settled in to home life now, it takes awhile and for some it takes longer than others. Since they don't grow up in a house there are things that they have never experienced, such as: um, toys...crazy, right?! The smell of food cooking, going up and down stairs, being an only dog in the whole place, sleeping on a cozy dog bed instead of in a crate, hearing the vacuum...the list goes on! It really is the most rewarding thing when you can see a greyhound who comes straight from the track (hasn't been in a foster home) come out of their shell. Especially the super duper shy and timid ones.....Cali!

Which 3 words best describe your dog’s personality?
Cleo - chill, super well behaved, a pleaser
Coco - goofy, playful, big baby
Cali - bull in a china shop, snuggled, shy

Who’s your dog’s favourite person?
I would have to say that I am their favorite person, I am usually the one feeding and walking them so I think its by default!

What’s your dog’s superpower?
Their eyes! All three have an uncanny ability to give you a look that would make you want to give them whatever it was they wanted. Or maybe I'm just weak, haha. Also sleeping, they are pro sleepers!

If your dog had a job, what would it be?
They do their jobs very well, it is to make me happy and they do that everyday! Also on the side they would want to find all the peanut butter everywhere and consume all of it!

What’s your dog’s most unappealing / most embarrassing habit?
The SBD's. You never know its coming until it hits you like a brick wall and you have to leave the room!

Where can we find you hanging out with your dog?
Mostly at home, in the warm weather we hang out on the front porch or in the backyard. They have a kiddie pool that they like to lay down in when its super hot. We go for lots of walks around the neighborhood and nearby parks. We also spend time near Kueka lake which is one of the Finger Lakes. They get to visit their "cousins" in Cleveland every so often. My best friend lives there with her family and has two rescue greyhounds.

Finish this sentence "a dog walks into a bar….”
….and says "can I get a greyhound" (an actual cocktail, vodka and grapefruit juice!)
